Agricultural Facilities

Agriculture is one of the main sources of odour in the UK, with many different types of odour sources that vary with seasons and growing cycles. Although odour is synonymous with farming, it can be a nuisance, cause annoyance and disamenity and also induce health effects.

With the increasing urban expansion and movement of people to living in rural areas, odour complaints are becoming more frequent. With increasing awareness in recent years, odour is becoming an ever increasing hot topic in the UK, with more developments are being objected to due to potential impacts upon local amenity.

Odour Consultants (ODC) regularly provide odour services for farmers, such as assessments of slurry stores, cow sheds, pig farms, anaerobic digestion, silage, broiler sheds, egg laying facilities, animal markets, and many more. With access to over 70 years of experience, including expert witness support, we are well suited to help.

It is important that farmers be aware of recent and upcoming guidance, policy, strategy and legislation changes with regards to odour. Many farmers are unwittingly opening themselves to risks of fines from the Environment Agency, where early advice could avoid potential issues later on. Odour Consultants actively recommend early discussions to help minimise risks.

Due to the increased storage capacity which is required by the Environment Agency and Natural England, many farmers will need to upgrade their existing slurry stores to haveĀ sufficient capacity to allow spreading to only occur between April and September. This will often require planning permission, for which an odour assessment forms a key document to be submitted as part of the application.

ODC have experience of helping multiple farmers successfully obtaining planning permission for new slurry towers and lagoons.
