Odour Abatement and Control

There are many ways to control and abate odours, the size and nature of which can vary widely depending on the source of odour and the setting within which is needs to be controlled.

When considering appropriate abatement, it is important to follow recommended abatement measures set out in guidance. For industrial sites, the Environment Agency (EA) and Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) set out good practice measures. For wastewater treatment, UKWIR and regional water industry bodies set out specific requirements.

The latest UK guidance ‘Guidance on the Control of Odour and Noise from Commercial Kitchen Exhaust Systems’ was published by Defra in 2005 and was withdrawn in 2017. There has since been no formal replacement. Independent guidance was issued by EMAQ+ in 2018, as an update to the former Defra guidance. This sets out much of the same information and includes updated details of potential abatement technologies.

ODC can provide advice and plans setting out appropriate odour control and abatement measures, and where support clients with the implementation where needed. With access to over 70 years of experience, we are well suited to help.
