Odour is a very subjective discipline with many sources and multiple methods of assessment. It can be a nuisance, cause annoyance and disamenity and also induce health effects. Historically, odour has often been an overlooked subject that later causes issues leading to complaints. With increasing awareness in recent years, odour is becoming an ever increasing hot topic in the UK and has been a material consideration for airport expansions and developments adjacent to airfields, due to potential impacts upon local amenity.

Odour Consultants (ODC) can provide odour services for developers, objectors and local authorities. Specifically for aviation, our team have assessed odour from several main UK airports, provided technical review services, and supported successful planning applications for residential developments adjacent to airfields. With access to over 70 years of experience, including expert witness support, we are well suited to help.

Early discussions between ODC and airport operators are recommended to help address any issues early on through good practice design and appropriate abatement and control.

Odour Management Plans provide a documented approach for operators to follow to minimise odours. While odours from aircraft can be difficult to control, operators typically have better options for controlling emissions from ground units and onsite restaurants.
